Learn

One of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself.  – C.S. Lewis

At First Christian Church we try to provide ways of learning for all ages…on Sundays and weekdays, in formal classes and informal settings, from knowledge-based instruction to practice-based experiences.

Sunday morning learning sessions are offered both before worship (from around 9:00-9:45 a.m.) and after (from 11:15-12:15). The later session (11:15) features classes and groups for the whole family. Babies and toddlers (ages 0-3) may choose to stay in the nursery all morning, or spend time with caregivers in worship and Parents’ Cafe. Older children may participate in Children Worship & Wonder during the 10:00 service, then move to Sunday school for hands-on learning and activities. Teenagers are encouraged to stay after worship for project-based activities and discussion.

For Individuals & Families

The Joyful Noise Choir Gives Thanks on November 26
There are few things that bear more spiritual fruit than families and friends lifting their voices together in sacred song. It’s lovely when a kids choir sings for the adults, but when children sing WITH their parents, families create lifelong memories of practicing faith together.

If you think you can’t sing in a choir because you can’t practice on weeknights, or you can’t sing in another language, or you’re just not good enough, there’s no nice way to say this: You’re wrong! Remember, the Psalmist says to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Not a perfect aria, just a joyful noise.

The Joyful Noise choir will practice each Sunday morning, immediately following worship, for about 10 minutes. The choir will sing every 4-8 weeks during worship.

On November 26, we’ll have a final practice at 9:30 a.m., then share two songs during worship. Join us (even if you can’t come at 9:30)! Click here to download a Microsoft Word document with words and music.

Each month the Avenues Team introduces a new spiritual practice and leads us through one example during weekly worship. Our practice for September 10-October 1 is contemplative prayer. Below are links to bulletin inserts guiding you through each practice.

If you have a family with young children or teenagers, come to Parent Cafe (Sunday mornings 11:15-Noon in Room 2, lower level) to discuss how you might adapt the practice for your family. Or download the “five finger prayer” or the “prayer trip with God” form for younger children.
