Welcome

Welcome to First Christian Church! We’re glad that you’ve found our website, and now that you’re here we hope you’ll take a look around and get to know us a little. Whether you grew up going to church every Sunday, or you are coming back to church after years of being away, or you have never attended church, know that others at First Christian Church have been on similar paths. We don’t all approach life and faith in the same way, but we do our best to welcome one another in the same way that God has graciously welcomed each of us. And we look forward to welcoming you! We gather for worship each Sunday morning at 10:00 am in the sanctuary. That service is also livestreamed and can be accessed each week as it happens or in the video archive. Links are on our homepage. You can be in touch with us by filling out the attendance form or prayer request form on our homepage, using the contact section of this website, or by calling the church office at 812-332-4459.

First Christian Church

We have been at the corner of Kirkwood & Washington in downtown Bloomington for more than 190 years.

Our Identity Statement

“We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.”

The FCC Community

First Christian Church (FCC) has provided ministry and service at the corner of Kirkwood & Washington in downtown Bloomington for more than 190 years! We are a progressive and inclusive congregation affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)At FCC you won’t hear preaching that is harsh or judgmental, but you will be challenged, uplifted, and encouraged. You will sense that connections matter and make a difference: connections with one another, connections with God, and connections with the community outside the door. We invite you to join us for worship, learning, and service opportunities throughout the year.

Worship at FCC

Sunday worship at FCC is traditional in style and music while progressive in theology. You are invited to join us in person or via livestream as we worship each Sunday at 10:00 am. Simply click on the “livestream” button on our homepage at 10:00 am on Sunday. You will be offered a grace-filled and authentic welcome, music that will lift your spirit and touch your soul and preaching that doesn’t expect you to check your mind at the door. As part of “a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world” you will be invited to the Lord’s Table, where all are welcome.

Our monthly Jazz Vespers service is offered in person and online on the third Friday of each month at 6:30 pm. This special service offers a contemplative time to reflect, meditate, or simply “be” as you listen to the music and poetry, and experience the authentic warmth of a faith community that gently welcomes ALL.

Our most recent services can be viewed on our homepage. Archives of our sermons can be found HERE, and archives of our Jazz Vespers services can be found HERE.

FCC offers worship opportunities and special events throughout the year. Stay informed of upcoming services and events by subscribing to our bi-monthly newsletter, The Christian Visitor.

Spiritual Growth and Community Connections

At First Christian Church, you will find an open-ended invitation to connect deeply with others and with God. Our Family and Faith Formation ministry provides support and learning opportunities for all ages, wherever you are on life’s journey. You’ll find programs on Sundays and during the week; in formal classes and informal settings; from knowledge-based instruction to practice-based experiences. Our programs include book study and discussion groups, mediation practice, and groups with a focus on art and spirituality. You can find our current list of programs and classes for adults here. Opportunities for families with children and teens can be found here. FCC’s commitment to a caring community provides opportunities for hands-on service that make a difference in the world. You’ll find us swinging a hammer at a Habitat for Humanity Build, making breakfast on Sunday morning for our neighbors, or traveling outside of our community to build connections across miles and culture.
